Marjorie Caroline Barrows

June 1, 1943 — February 22, 2025

Harlowton

Marjorie Caroline Barrows (née Hiner), beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on February 22nd, 2025. A Montana native for life, she was raised on a ranch six miles north of Harlowton by her parents Margaret Muller Hiner and Clyde Romulus Hiner, alongside her brother Bill “Willy,” and sister Kathryn “Kid.”

Marjorie, or “Marj” attended Harlowton Elementary and Harlowton High School. Throughout her life, Marjorie spent her time caring for her family and working tirelessly in various roles. She worked as a teacher, an office administrator, and even sold Tupperware and encyclopedias to help make ends meet. In 1972, she married Glenn Barrows, whom she met at a Christmas party while both were teaching in Helena, Montana. Coincidentally enough, Glenn had taught her brother and sister in Harlowton years before, just after Marjorie had left for college at Eastern Montana University. They shared a loving marriage until Glenn’s passing in 2020.

Together, they raised three sons and cherished their four grandchildren. Marjorie and Glenn built a life in the Helena Valley, where they enjoyed traveling in their RV to visit friends and family, ice fishing, and tending to their garden, chickens, and those aforementioned three sons!

As for herself, Marjorie loved sewing and watching movies, especially the Hallmark kind. At times she enjoyed playing the piano, painting, and reading. She was incredibly bright, sharp-witted and savvy, a meticulous, organized thinker who once caught a mistake in TurboTax — a moment she recounted with pride. Her laugh, her eye-rolls, her stubborn streak, and her quirky idiosyncrasies will always be remembered by those who were fortunate to know her.

After Glenn’s passing, Marjorie returned to Harlowton, finding joy in reconnecting with her family. She cherished visits and support from her sister Kathryn, her late brother Bill and sister-in-law Roberta (Bobbie) Hiner, her cousins Joan Griffith, Esther Kalitowski, Lorna Theriault, Atha Stagner, niece-in-law Peggy Hiner, and many others.

Marjorie is survived by her sister, Kathryn Hiner, and her three sons and their families: Nathan and Michelle Barrows, with their daughters Laurel and Linnea; Marshall and Nora Barrows, with their daughters Cassidy and Darby; and Armon and Katie Barrows. She is fondly remembered by numerous extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Harlowton this summer. Marjorie will be laid to rest at Fort Harrison in Helena, alongside her beloved husband, Glenn.

Rest in peace, Mom. We love you.
