Janet Hill

Janet Hill, 72, of Harlowton, passed away September 1, 2024 in Wheatland Memorial Healthcare of cancer. She was born on January 6, 1952 in Harlowton. She was the second baby born at the current hospital. Janet is the daughter of Homer and Mary (Muller) Griffith. The 2nd of 7 kids, Janet grew up working on the family ranch. She graduated in 1970 from Harlowton High School and attended Eastern Montana College in Billings. In 1974 Janet graduated with a business degree.

While playing flag football in college she met Keith Hill from Great Falls. Keith and Janet were married on September 7, 1974 in Harlowton. They missed celebrating 50 years of marriage by 6 days.

Janet spent 36 years working at the Wheatland County Courthouse as Deputy Treasurer and then as District Clerk of Court.

Janet enjoyed her pinochle group and played cards with them for over 40 years. She was a member of The Moose, Senior Citizen's Center, and served on the board of the Harlowton Credit Union. For over 30 years she hosted Easter dinners for 30 plus family members.

Janet had a great smile and loved following her kids and grandkids in their activities. She was happiest riding the four-wheeler checking cows at Shawmut. The legacy of family and fun continues at the cabin Keith and Janet built on Swan Lake.

Janet is survived by her husband Keith and children Kelly (Kirk) Scheel and Keegan (Lacey) Hill. Her grandkids: Tyson, Avery, Tanner, and Harlow will miss their #1 sideline cheerleader. Also surviving are sisters: Atha (Clint) Stagner, Joan Griffith, and Lorna (Bill) Theriault brothers: Robert (Emily) Griffith and Sam Griffith.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Judy Freestad.

Memorial Services for Janet will be on Wednesday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. at the Harlowton Youth Center.

Janet loved Harlowton and was an active member of the Harlowton Kiwanis Club for 30 years. During that time she was Treasurer for many years and served a term as President. She requested memorials go to the Kiwanis Club which supports the youth of the community.
