James (“Jim”) Gordon Burrows 76 of Harlowton passed away on January 9th, 2019 in Quartzsite, AZ where he lived during the winter months living in his birth town of Harlowton the remainder of the year.  Jim was born on December 16th, 1942 in Harlowton, MT the son of Earl McKinley and Angeline Adeline (Hamel) Burrows.  Upon graduation from High School in Harlowton, Jim enlisted in the United States Army in June 1961 where he then attended Basic Training at Fort Ord, CA and advanced training at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN.  After completing his training, Jim served in Korea and then Chicago, IL.  Jim was honorably discharged from the Army in 1965.

In the fall of 1965 Jim went to work for the Montana Highway Department and moved to Helena, MT.  Five years later (1970), Jim left the Highway Department and spent a period of time traveling and visiting various places around the country.  In the spring of 1971 Jim moved back to Harlowton, MT and went to work for The Milwaukee Railroad.  It was during this period (1973) Jim enlisted in the Montana Army National Guard and served in the Harlowton unit.   In 1980, the Milwaukee Railroad closed its operations in Harlowton and Jim went to work for the Montana Army National Guard full time (AGR) as a Recruiter.  Jim moved to Helena, MT initially, and then to Great Falls, MT.  While serving in both the Army and Army National Guard, Jim received numerous awards to include the Meritorious Service Medal.  Jim medically retired from the Army in 1991 as a Sergeant First Class (SFC), and moved back to Harlowton. 

After retiring, Jim enjoyed spending time and traveling with close friends and his beloved sister Cora.  He enjoyed photography, studying Montana History, visiting ghost towns/mines, woodworking and being active and participating in events with the American Legion and other service organizations. 

Jim is survived by his’s siblings Blanche (Burrows) Nilsen and Edward Burrows and several nieces and nephews.   

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings:  Harriet, Marguerite, Earl, Ernest, Cora, Pauline, Robert. 

Memorial Graveside Services for James “Jim” Burrows will be Saturday, May 25th, 2019 at Noon in the Harlowton Cemetery.  Cremation has taken place with the Perkins Funeral Home assisting the family.
