William J. Shepherd “Shep” 87 of Harlowton died early Sunday morning, March 18, 2018 in Wheatland Memorial Healthcare of natural causes. He was born October 25, 1930 on the Winnecook Ranch in Harlowton the son of Charles and Verdie (Abney) Shepherd. He received his schooling in Harlowton schools and he began his working years at Painter’s Grocery Store where he worked during and after high school to help support his family. He later worked at Lammers Store and then at the Milwaukee Railroad. In 1950 he married Alice (Penny) Fulton, they later divorced. He operated Shep’s Phillips 66 Station and Wrecker Service until 1959 when he sold the station following a serious car accident that left him paralyzed. He worked hard to recover and was able to get around pretty good. He then began his second career repairing electrical appliances in his home until moving that business into a shop and he added Antiques to the business in the mid 1960’s and it became Shep’s Antiques. He also worked as a hunting guide in the 1960’s for many out-of-state hunters. He married Ladeane Maston in 1985 and they continued to operate the business until 2014 when they entered the Wheatland Memorial Nursing Home.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and their cabin on Deadman’s Basin and was known as the man that could fix anything. Bill was always willing to help anyone that needed help. His sense of humor and smile will be missed.
He was a member of the Montana Army National Guard, President of the Musselshell Boat Club and a member of the Federated Church in Harlowton.
He is survived by his wife Ladeane of Harlowton, MT; one son Ken (Mary) of Bozeman, MT; three daughters Karen (Floyd) Yant of Bozeman, MT, Kathleen (Val) Schreiber of Harlowton, MT and Kelly Jean Peake of Billings, MT; one step- son Jack Huston in Wyoming; two step-daughters Winnona (George) Widdicombe of Harlowton, MT and Tina Huston of Denver, CO; one sister Donabel (Ralph) Lotz of Kissimmee, FL; 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; one great great grandson, several step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Memorial Services for William J. Shepherd will be Thursday, March 29th, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Perkins Chapel. Committal will take place in the Harlowton Cemetery at a later date.
