Winona “Nona” M. Smith, 87, a lifelong resident of Harlowton, passed away early Saturday morning, February 25th, 2017 in Wheatland Memorial Healthcare of natural causes.

She was born June 17, 1929 in Harlowton, the daughter of Alvin C. and Marion (Duncan) Anderson. She received her education in Harlowton, graduating from Harlowton High School in 1947. She began working for the Milwaukee Railroad while in high school. On January 10, 1948, she was united in marriage to Perry T. Smith in Great Falls, MT; they raised three children together. They made their home in Harlowton where Nona continued to work for the railroad. She later worked at Painters Grocery Store until she began her career with Continental Bank in Harlowton. She retired in the mid 1980’s from the bank as an auditor. Nona was among the first classes of certified EMT’s in Wheatland County, and volunteered on the ambulance for many years.

Nona enjoyed camping with her family, crafts, traveling, shopping, fifth-wheel trailer travel, golf, ceramics with Doris, and woodworking with Nancy. She especially liked her Wednesday luncheon meetings with the Ladies Golf Club at Jawbone Creek Golf Club. She was a great cook. Her family especially enjoyed her cakes, cookies, and gravies. In later years she enjoyed meeting her friends daily for coffee.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Perry (P.T.) of Harlowton; son Perry T., Jr. (Carol) of Missoula; daughters Jeanne (Charles) Widdicombe of Billings, and Karen (Tom) Sippel of Glendale, AZ; one brother, Alvin C. “Bud” (Bobbi) Anderson of Lake City, MN; six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and her pug, Rufus. Nona was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jean Meyer.

The family would like to thank the hospital staff at Wheatland Memorial for the wonderful care they provided. A memorial graveside service for Nona will be held later this summer; cremation has taken place. The Perkins Funeral Home is assisting.

Memorials may be made to the Harlowton Senior Center, the Jawbone Creek Golf Club, or the charity of choice and can be sent to Perkins Funeral Home, PO Box 313, Harlowton, MT 59036. Condolences for the family may be posted on-line at www.perkinsfuneralandcremation.com.
