William "Dale" Schmeling 85 of Harlowton passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on December 7th, 2013 at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born July 1st, 1928 on a homestead near Shawmut, MT the son of James Edward and Martha Louise (Townsend) Schmeling. He attended school in Harlowton graduating from Harlowton High School in 1946.

He then entered the United States Marine Corp in 1946 and following his discharge in 1947. He attended Montana State University in Bozeman and then he attended Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Salt Lake City, Utah for two years receiving an Associate Degree in Photography and where he met his lifelong love, Barbara W. Kaighn. They were married June 25, 1950 in Salt Lake City, and celebrated 63.5 years together. They then returned to Harlowton where he worked for his father at Schmeling Cold Storage. He was working also as a photographer and in 1957 he started Schmeling Studio at its present location in Harlowton. He continued this business serving Southcentral and Central Montana until the time of his death.

Mr. Schmeling enjoyed hunting, fishing, singing in the church choir and gardening where he was well known for his tomatoes.

He was a member of the Federated Church serving many years as a Board Member and Choir member. He was also a member of Kiwanis, VFW and Russel Country Board.

He is survived by his wife Barbara of Harlowton; son Paul M. (Susan) of Onalaska, WI; daughters Carol E. (Jim) DeLong of Las Vegas, NV and Laura G. Kuchera of Billings, MT; an older brother Robert D. (Eleanor) of Hemet, CA; a younger sister Thelma V. (Frank) Willems of Helena, MT; 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services for William Dale Schmeling will be Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in the Federated Church in Harlowton with interment to follow in the Harlowton Cemetery. Perkins Funeral Home of Harlowton is assisting the family.
